Pfeil Fishtail Carving Tool - If I could have only one tool it would be a #3 fishtail. This is a pro quailty #3 sweep gauge, that is 20mm wide at the cutting edge (20mm=3/4 in). This is a full size wood carving gauge with the slightest amount of curve making it an all around must have. A #3 of any width is great for background fielding, stop cuts and rounding over shapes. Hands down this is one of the most used tools on my bench.

When wood carving, a buffing wheel set up is a must to keep the edges of your carving tools clean and smooth. I put one of these rigid cotton wheels on one side of my bench grinder and use a buffing compound. These are 6 inch diameter, with a a 1/2" arbor hole for my particular grinder.
